Assignment:
Temporary until Friday 18th September, with potential extension

Start Date:
Immediate start

Working Pattern:
Alternating weekly shifts

  • Week 1: 06:00-14:00
  • Week 2: 13:00-21:00
 

Overall Purpose of the Role

To inspect, maintain, diagnose, and repair faults on Council vehicles, plant, machinery, and equipment. To carry out MOT testing on both Council-owned and privately owned vehicles. To support customers by delivering high‑quality maintenance and repair services.


Main Responsibilities

  • Perform routine services and repairs on the Council’s fleet vehicles and equipment.

  • Order spare parts in consultation with the Fleet Workshop Manager to ensure cost‑effective repairs.

  • Support workshop operations by deputising for the Fleet Workshop Manager when required.

  • Report persistent technical issues and assist in developing solutions.

  • Ensure repair standards are met and vehicle downtime is kept to a minimum.

  • Maintain safe working practices and comply with statutory requirements.

  • Keep the workshop clean and dispose of materials in line with environmental policies.

  • Communicate with the Fleet Workshop Manager and customers regarding vehicle availability.

  • Complete job cards, inspection reports, and statutory documentation accurately and promptly.

  • Support MOT station operations and booking processes.

  • Carry out MOT tests and issue certificates.

  • Road test vehicles as required.


Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Motor Vehicle Technology qualification - City & Guilds Level 2 or NVQ equivalent, or 10 year's proven experience in light and heavy commercial vehicle maintenance.

    • Copy of certificate must be provided, or evidence of experience must be clearly written within the CV.

  • Ability to accurately diagnose a wide range of vehicle faults.

  • Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic vehicle systems.

  • Full licence for vehicles up to 3,500 kg GVW.

  • Ability to achieve nominated MOT tester status within 12 months.

  • Ability to obtain a vocational Category C licence within 12 months.

  • Ability to obtain IRTEC vehicle inspection certification.

  • Ability to carry out heavy lifting, sometimes in awkward positions.
