Job Title: Waste Operative

Location: Scunthorpe, DN16
Contract Type: Temporary (approx. 2 months)
Start Date: 9th July
Salary: £12.45 per hour
Hours: 37 hrs/week
Working Days: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
Shift Time: 8:00am – 4:00pm

Job Purpose:

To serve the community and take pride in the local area by carrying out waste removal and disposal duties. You may work across various areas including:

• Household Recycling Centres
• Waste Collection Rounds
• Waste Transfer Stations

Flexibility is required to work across all these areas as needed.

Main Responsibilities:

• Assist customers with waste disposal.
• Provide advice on recycling and correct waste disposal.
• Support vehicle drivers during collections and at disposal sites.
• Operate bin lifting equipment safely.
• Ensure all duties are performed safely and efficiently.
• Keep the site clean and tidy.
• Manage site containers for maximum efficiency.
• Handle payments and issue receipts where required.
• Maintain accurate records and site compliance.
• Follow site permit regulations and council procedures.

Skills & Experience (Essential):

• Manual handling skills
• Ability to walk several miles daily
• Safe operation of machinery
• Familiarity with the local area
• Strong customer service skills
• Understanding of waste contract terms
• Sensitivity to diverse customer needs
• Ability to work independently and in a team
• Work under pressure and manage priorities
• Handle difficult customers professionally
• Literate and numerate
• Tactful and diplomatic

Desirable Skills:

• Previous experience in waste services or public sector
• Further knowledge of health and safety in a similar role

Work Environment:

• Demands: Possible interruptions from weather, breakdowns, road closures
• Physical Requirements: Regular walking, lifting, bin handling
• Conditions: Outdoor work in all weather conditions
• Risks: Working near roads, interacting with the public
